Fuses or Breakers

I have people ask me all time .Which is safer?
No doubt about it Breakers are the best.
The biggest Mistake that I see when I go in some of the older homes,
that still have the old fuse panels is that most all of the circuits are on 30amp fuses.
This is not only wrong it is dangerous All Standard lighting&receptacle circuits,
Should have 15 or 20 amp  fuses. For the most part 20 amp.
Most dryer & water heater circuits 30 amp 240 volt.
Most Range circuits are 50 amp 240 volt
When the amp. rateing of the wire is exceeded the wire can get hot and start a fire.
It is very important that the over current device fuse or breaker be sized correct for the wire size.
example # 12 wire is rated for a maximum of 20 amps and this should not be
exceeded under any circumstances.

Ground Fault Protection

Ground Fault Circuit Interupters ( G.F.C.I.)

Most everyone I'm sure has heard of this device.
It is a very Important part of the Electrical circuitry in your house.
The GFCI's job is to protect you from A potentially fatal electric shock.
GFCI protection should be provided any where there is water present.
such places include Bath Rooms, Kitchen Counter tops, Outdoor Receptacles.
Basements that are unfinished,Any Receptacles around swimming pools.
Circulating pumps for pools should also be protected. This is just to name a few.
There are many places that GFCI's should be used to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Note: GFCI"s should professionally installed to insure proper operation.

Always Ask

Always ask questions when considering a contractor to do your work.
Regardless of the type of work. Electrical ,  plumbing Carpenter
On Electrical work always require Liscensed&Insured.
If the person is not liscensed you don't want him/her.
Ask if they have their work inspected?
All electrical work of any magnitude should be inspected.
This is a safe guard for you the home owner and the Contractor.
If the contractor seems to shy away from the Inspection issue,
This is a red flag.I would look for another Contractor.
Inspection Is required for the work to be legal.
Inspection is also a good Quality Assurance Tool for the home owner.
This will insure that you are getting a code compliant job.
Code Compliance is the minimum safety requirement

                                             Smoke Detectors

If you do not have smoke detectors in your home,You could be in danger!
I would recommend adding a smoke detector in each Bed Room, and each ajoining room. Also you need one on each level of the house.Example 1 In Unfinished Basement.   Battery Smoke detectors, are economical and easy to install,
And will provide you with much needed protection! Just be sure to install new,
Batteries on a regular basis. It is recommended to change batteries when the time changes in the spring and fall.
Do not put smoke Detectors to close to cooking areas of Kitchen,or close to bath rooms.
